Climate matters in all we do
Our commitment to taking action to reduce our impact on the environment extends across our organisation and through to our grant making.
For grant recipients
Many of our grants now include a ‘greening’ allowance, an additional sum of money to support grant recipients in making their projects or organisations greener or to go towards learning and upskilling their staff to do so in the future.
Going Green Together programme
As an organisation, we support the Going Green Together programme of work, which is funded by the National Community Lottery and delivered by Voluntary Organisations Network North East, Vonne.
This project supports voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations in the northeast of England to become environmentally sustainable.
By providing tools, resources, events and training, the programme builds knowledge and confidence around climate and the environment and the ways organisations can make an impact.
Our commitments
We’re a signatory of the SME Climate Commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2040 or as soon as possible.

We consider our climate commitments in all the work we do, including:
- adopting a hybrid working week and a 9-day fortnight, both of which help us reduce commute days for our team
- segregating all office waste to increase our recycled waste
- moving our website hosting to a green hosting service, meaning we are now hosted by a data centre using sustainable energy
- using local suppliers as much as possible to contribute to the local economy and reduce our carbon footprint
- using sustainable ink and paper when printing marketing or promotional materials.
Our progress
We’ve reduced our Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 25% compared to our benchmark year pre-COVID-19.
Scope 1 is direct emissions, anything that we have direct control over.
Scope 2 is energy and indirect emissions, which are those released into the atmosphere because of the consumption of purchased electricity.
